On Thursday, 28th November, the Cork Lifelong Learning Awards Ceremony, hosted by Cork Learning City, celebrated outstanding contributions to lifelong learning. Among the shining stars of the event was the Cyber Safety Team from MTU, who emerged victorious in the Active Retirement award category.
The ceremony, which honors individuals and organizations for their innovation, resilience, and dedication to education across all ages and abilities, was a testament to the incredible work happening in Cork. The Cyber Safety Team showcased a range of impactful initiatives designed to promote online safety for older adults, including:
- Creating a cyber safety card game tailored for older adults.
- Publishing groundbreaking research addressing the unique needs and concerns of older adults online.
- Training the Irish Crime Victims Helpline on cybercrime awareness and response.
- Hosting a co-creation workshop during the Cork Lifelong Learning Festival, where older adults in Cork City Library learned cyber safety tips and shared their valuable feedback.
The ceremony itself was a lively celebration, featuring local live music, dining, and the presence of MTU leadership alongside the Lord Mayor of Cork. The Cyber Safety Team faced strong competition, with three remarkable projects shortlisted in the Active Retirement category. However, it was their innovative approach and dedication that earned them the top award.
As the winners were announced, Cyber Safety researchers Moya Cronin, Jacob Camilleri, and Melanie Gruben joyfully took to the stage to accept their award and posed for celebratory photos with the Lord Mayor. Their victory is more than a recognition of their hard work—it’s a symbol of the positive impact MTU strives to achieve in Cork and across the Irish community.
Funded by a Research Ireland National Challenge Fund, the Cyber Safety Team remains steadfast in their mission to empower everyone to navigate the online world safely and confidently.
This achievement underscores the vital role of lifelong learning in empowering communities and enhancing digital resilience. Congratulations to the Cyber Safety Team at MTU for their well-deserved win and their ongoing contributions to making Cork a safer and more inclusive place for learning!
